Celebrate National Poetry Month with JC Sulzenko
Lots to celebrate in April, particularly to focus on Canadian poets and poetry.
JC encourages poetry lovers to head to the library or the bookstore and support Canada’s amazing poetry community.
Here are some of the ways in which she is marking National Poetry Month:
- On April 6, after the noon news, JC appeared on The County Writes… The County Reads on 99.3FM The County (Prince Edward County). She selected poems related to the theme of family, writ large, by 12 Canadian poets whom she has met. The poets are:
- Brian Flack
- Allan Briesmaster
- Richard Greene
- Deborah-Anne Tunney
- Blaine Marchand
- Mary Lou Souter-Hynes
- Jean Van Loon
- Kate Marshall-Flaherty
- Olive Senior
- Cornelia Hoogland
- Carol A. Stephen
- Shani Mootoo
Here’s the post about the program which began with host Lynn Pickering’s interview of former Parliamentary and Toronto Poet Laureate, George Elliott Clarke. The broadcast ended with local bookseller par excellence, David Sweet recalling when he first recited an Al Purdy poem in high school and reading two well-know and loved Purdy poems.

- On April 7, JC always open to new learnings, takes part in the Federation of BC Writers online intensive writing seminar, “Poetic Possibilities.” https://www.bcwriters.ca/event-5990877
- On April 11, Poetry Super Highway https://www.poetrysuperhighway.com/psh/
will post a writing prompt JC suggested. Look it up on that day. Write a poem from it. Send it to JC.
- JC’s found poetry workshop for members of the Literary Section of the Heliconian Club (Toronto) was postponed for reasons of completely unseasonable and unacceptable weather on April 2! It will go ahead later in the month.
- The Cobourg Picnic Table Anthology project accepted JC’s poem which will be etched into a tabletop! A first for her!
- Silver Birch Press will feature her poem “ A ritual in five time” in its new series, “My Favorite Things.” https://silverbirchpress.wordpress.com
